44-Year Record Broken as 350mm Rainfall Lashes Lahore

The city of Lahore has witnessed an unprecedented rainfall of 350mm, breaking a 44-year-old record. This torrential downpour has caused significant disruptions and challenges for the residents.

The heavy rainfall, which began in the early hours of the morning, continued unabated, leading to widespread flooding in various parts of the city.

According to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) spokesperson, intermittent rain is continuing at most places on the national highways. Roads were submerged, causing severe traffic congestion and making commuting nearly impossible. Several low-lying areas were inundated, leading to water entering homes and businesses.

Local authorities have mobilized emergency services to deal with the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist those stranded by the floodwaters. Efforts are also being made to clear clogged drainage systems to facilitate water runoff.

The city’s infrastructure has been severely tested by this unprecedented weather event. Power outages have been reported in several areas, adding to the challenges faced by the residents. The heavy rainfall has also affected public transport, with many buses and trains delayed or canceled.

Meteorologists have attributed this extreme weather event to climate change and have warned of the possibility of more such occurrences in the future. The chief meteorologist said that it is expected that rain would halt tomorrow.

However, he said, from August 3, there’s another spell expected, which will continue till August 6. “Across the country, for the next 10 days, we expect heavy rains,” he added. They have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation improves.
