Babar Captaincy in Doubt? PCB Consults Ex-Players

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has thrown Babar captaincy into doubt following the team’s dismal performance in the T20 World Cup. The Men in Green crashed out of the tournament in the group stage, prompting calls for a leadership overhaul.

Naqvi, addressing a press conference in Lahore, revealed plans to consult former cricketers in determining the future leadership. While specific names weren’t mentioned, the chairman emphasized their role in the decision-making process.

“There is no decision taken so far related to Babar Azam,” Naqvi clarified. He pointed towards engaging with ex-cricketers “committed to the betterment of Pakistan cricket.”

This move comes amidst intense scrutiny after Pakistan’s shocking World Cup exit. Defeats to India and the United States exposed shortcomings in the team. Naqvi confirmed receiving a detailed report from a former cricketer analyzing the team’s weaknesses.

Urging caution against knee-jerk reactions, Naqvi said, “People are asking about surgery, but one shouldn’t take decisions while angry. Hasty decisions can be harmful.” He previously advocated for significant changes, but now seems to favor a more measured approach.

The PCB chairman also expressed dissatisfaction with the current selection committee’s decisions. “Every member will be held accountable,” he declared, hinting at potential reforms in the selection process.

White-ball head coach Gary Kirsten’s future is also up in the air. Naqvi confirmed receiving a performance report from the South African and indicated a meeting is scheduled to discuss it further.

The chairman reiterated the importance of domestic cricket, stating that player selection will prioritize domestic performances. This suggests a need to address potential flaws in Pakistan’s domestic structure.

With Babar’s captaincy hanging in the balance, PCB’s consultations with former players and a potential revamp of the selection committee will shape the future course of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket.
