A Saurya Airlines plane slid off the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and crashed Wednesday. Of the passengers, only the pilot survived and is being treated at a hospital.
All 18 passengers aboard – 18 Nepalis and a citizen of Yemen – were staff members of the airline. Billows of thick smoke were rising from the burning aircraft, which crashed just as it took off to head towards Pokhara.
It was en route for technical maintenance when the tragedy occurred this morning at around 11 am.
Rescue operations began immediately, and officials did their best to get the situation under control. It is not the first time that this has happened in a country with Nepal’s terrain.
