Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who is currently in jail on charges related to the May 9 case, will be contesting for the position of Chancellor at Oxford University.
According to a report by The Telegraph, the position of Chancellor at Oxford University became vacant after the resignation of 80-year-old Lord Patten, who served in this role for 21 years.
For the first time, the election for Chancellor will follow the traditional method of online voting, allowing Oxford University alumni to participate. Typically, politicians are considered for the chancellorship.
In a conversation with foreign media, Imran Khan’s advisor, Syed Zulfi Bukhari, confirmed that Imran Khan would be contesting for the Chancellor position due to public demand. Bukhari stated that they would announce this decision publicly and initiate a signature campaign once they receive approval from Imran Khan.
Imran Khan completed his education in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from Keble College, Oxford in 1972. He made his test debut for Pakistan in 1971 and also captained the Oxford University cricket team. In 2005, Imran Khan was elected Chancellor of Bradford University, a position he held until 2014.
Former British Prime Ministers Sir Tony Blair and Boris Johnson are also among the candidates for the position of Chancellor at Oxford University.
