In a landmark decision during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting held in Bali in January 2024, Pakistan has been granted the authority to chair the ACC. Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is set to assume the role of ACC President starting January 2025.
Naqvi’s presidency will span a two-year term, overseeing the council’s initiatives and activities across the continent.
In the same meeting, the current ACC president, Jay Shah, received a one-year extension to his term. This extension ensures continuity in leadership until Naqvi’s transition into the new role takes place smoothly.
Mohsin Naqvi, besides being the Chairman of the PCB, holds the portfolio of Interior Minister. With his upcoming role as ACC President, he will be managing three significant portfolios simultaneously.
However, Naqvi’s appointment has not been without controversy. Recently, star cricketer Shahid Afridi criticized him for holding multiple portfolios, arguing that Naqvi lacked sufficient knowledge about cricket.
The Pakistan cricket team faced a disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 in the first round. Currently, the team is preparing for the Asia Cup 2024, with reports suggesting that the Indian team might not travel to Pakistan to participate in the tournament.
