Jay Shah Set to Become Next ICC Chair After Greg Barclay’s Resignation

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to become the next Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the sudden resignation of current chair Greg Barclay. According to a report from *The Age*, Barclay informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chair Mike Baird, of his decision to step down during a video conference on Tuesday night.

Barclay’s resignation comes after Shah expressed interest in the role, asserting that he had secured enough support from ICC members to take over in November. An ICC spokesperson confirmed the news, stating, “ICC chair Greg Barclay has informed the board that he will not seek a third term and will vacate the position when his current tenure concludes at the end of November. Barclay was first appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022.”

The process to elect a new ICC chair is now underway, with current ICC directors required to submit nominations by August 27, 2024. If multiple candidates are nominated, an election will be held, with the successful candidate assuming office from December 1, 2024.

Barclay, who was eligible for another two-year term, reportedly chose to step aside after Jay Shah gained backing from several influential cricketing boards, including those of Australia and England. Should Shah be appointed, he is expected to serve a minimum three-year term under a revised constitution, with his tenure as BCCI secretary set to end next year.

As the ICC prepares for this leadership transition, questions remain about the future of ICC management, led by CEO Geoff Allardice, based in Dubai. Additionally, there are growing concerns over India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan next February.
