Islamabad, September 14, 2024– The government is preparing to seek parliamentary approval for significant constitutional amendments related to the judiciary.
Sources indicate that the amendments, which include extending the tenure of judges and changes to the appointment of the Chief Justice, will be introduced today in both the Senate and National Assembly.
The National Assembly session is scheduled for 3 PM, with a six-point agenda released. However, the constitutional amendment bill is not listed on the official agenda and is expected to be presented as a supplementary item.
For the amendments to pass, a two-thirds majority is required in both houses of Parliament.
In the National Assembly, the government currently holds 213 seats, needing an additional 11 votes to secure the required 224 for a two-thirds majority. In the Senate, where 64 votes are needed for passage, the government holds 59 seats, leaving the outcome uncertain.
The outcome of today’s session could be a pivotal moment for the government’s judicial reform efforts.
