Rawalpindi, August 25, 2024 – In a shocking turn of events, Pakistan has suffered a historic defeat in Test cricket, losing to Bangladesh for the first time in 23 years. The match, held at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, ended in disappointment for the home team as Bangladesh chased down an easy target of 30 runs without losing a wicket, sealing a 10-wicket victory.
The final day of the Test saw Pakistan’s batting lineup crumble, managing just 146 runs in their second innings. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan offered some resistance with a score of 51, but the rest of the team failed to deliver. Captain Shan Masood was dismissed for 14, continuing his struggle for form, while star batsman Babar Azam could only contribute 22 runs. Other key players, including Abdullah Shafique (37), Saud Shakeel, and Agha Salman, returned to the pavilion without scoring.
Bangladeshi spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s downfall, taking four and three wickets, respectively. Bangladesh had earlier built a commanding lead with a first-innings total of 565, thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim’s brilliant 191 and solid contributions from Shadman Islam (93) and Mominul Haque (50).
With this win, Bangladesh has taken an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second Test will also be played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, starting on August 30, 2024.
This defeat is a significant setback for Pakistan, impacting their hopes of qualifying for the ICC Test Championship final. The loss marks a dark day in Pakistan’s cricket history, as they were defeated by Bangladesh on home soil for the first time.
