In a significant development, Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, announced that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), could potentially face a military trial. Speaking during a talk show on a private news channel, Asif emphasized that accountability for the events of May 9 must be thorough, stating that the nation expects a 200% accountability.
Asif highlighted that during PTI’s government, 24 civilians were tried in military courts, with many receiving death sentences. He pointed out that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had extended an offer for negotiations to Imran Khan three times in the National Assembly, but the environment is not currently conducive for talks.
During the discussion, Asif also mentioned that if the military trial of Imran Khan proceeds, it will be open to the public. He stressed the importance of transparency, stating that the nation deserves to know Imran Khan’s role in the May 9 incidents and who chose the targets for that day. Asif added that the history of Pakistan has no precedent for the open trial of a general.
Asif also referenced former Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, who recently had to clarify his connection with former ISI chief Faiz Hameed. Asif claimed that Imran Khan and Hameed had a shared objective, which maintained their connection. He accused Imran Khan of providing manpower for the May 9 events, while Hameed orchestrated the conspiracy.
Furthermore, Asif revealed that the connection between Imran Khan and Hameed continued even after May 9, but he doubted their ability to rally support from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
This statement by Khawaja Asif has sparked intense debate, raising questions about the implications of a military trial for Imran Khan and its impact on the political landscape of Pakistan.
