Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the global governing body for cricket. Shah’s election further strengthens India’s already significant influence over international cricket.
At 35, Shah is the youngest Chairman in ICC history and is set to take over the role from current Chairman Greg Barclay in December 2024. Barclay chose not to seek a third term. Upon his election, Shah expressed his commitment to working with the ICC team and member nations to further promote cricket on a global scale.
Shah’s appointment underscores India’s growing dominance in the sport, a position bolstered by the fact that the subcontinent is responsible for generating nearly 90% of the global cricket revenue, according to a 2018 ICC report.
The son of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, Jay Shah has held the position of BCCI Secretary since 2019, making significant strides in cricket administration. He has emphasized his goal of making cricket more inclusive and widespread, focusing on innovation and new approaches to grow the game’s global appeal.
As the new Chairman, Shah’s vision is to embrace fresh ideas and continue expanding the love for cricket worldwide, ensuring that the sport remains vibrant and inclusive for all.
