KP Government Allots Reserved Seats to Martyrs’ Families of May 9

In a landmark decision, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to allot reserved seats to the families of the May 9 martyrs. Announced on Monday, this decision aims to recognize the sacrifices made on that day.

Sources say that reserved seats have been allocated to the widows of the martyrs, which include Javed Akakhel, Sikandar, Muhammad Bilal, Abrar Ahmad, and Javed Gill. This decision was made following the announcement by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan.

A few days ago, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, in an 8-5 judgment, ruled in favor of PTI by granting them reserved seats in the Assembly. This decision overturned a Peshawar High Court (PHC) judgment that had dismissed PTI’s appeal to allow its candidates to contest elections on reserved seats for non-Muslims and women.

The Supreme Court declared the actions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the reserved seats as “unconstitutional.” The ruling stated that “PTI is a qualified party, even without an election symbol,” but a designated body can assign it a symbol.

The opinion in favor of PTI was given by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justices Athar Minallah, Muneeb Akhtar, Ayesha Malik, Irfan Saadat, Shahid Waheed, Hassan Azhar Rizvi, and Ali Mazhar. Opposing the opinion were Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justices Jamal Mandokhail, Naeem Afghan, and Aminuddin Khan.

The Supreme Court also allowed PTI to submit a list of candidates for the reserved seats, but the 41 candidates had to provide certificates as evidence of their association with the party. This decision marked a breakthrough moment for PTI as a political party and acknowledged the sacrifices of its members and their families.
