Punjab Government Announces Electricity Relief for Consumers

In a significant move, the Punjab government has announced a relief package for electricity consumers, offering a reduction of PKR 14 per unit for users consuming between 201 and 500 units per month. This decision is aimed at providing financial relief to domestic consumers facing high electricity costs.

However, the relief will not be applicable to those using up to 200 units. According to sources within the Ministry of Power, it’s not feasible to offer this subsidy to low-consumption users due to the already low rates for lifeline users, which range from PKR 3.95 to PKR 10.06 per unit.

The relief initiative will require formal approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The Punjab government plans to submit a summary to the Power Division, which will then forward it to NEPRA for final authorization.

While the federal government has set a uniform electricity rate across the country, provincial governments have the autonomy to offer additional subsidies or relief to their residents. The Punjab government is exercising this right to provide targeted financial relief to its citizens, highlighting its commitment to easing the financial burden on the people.

The decision, however, will only apply to consumers within the specified range, ensuring that the relief is directed towards those who are more likely to benefit from it. Further developments are expected as the proposal moves through the necessary regulatory channels.
