With the motive of enhancing the transportation infrastructure, the Punjab government has given a go-ahead to a state-of-the-art tram service for Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved it during her recent visit to the Lahore Development Authority headquarters.

This is an ambitious LDA-led venture, measuring 11 kilometers, featuring ten stops, spaced approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers apart.

Modeled on the lines of the highly-improved tram systems in Finland and China, the idea behind it is to provide a world-class transportation facility at an estimated cost of Rs27 billion.

This tram route would pass through the posh localities, starting from the Main Boulevard at Kalma Chowk, then at Liberty, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road. The project aims to turn MM Alam Road into a one-way road in order to integrate it with the tram route, rhythmically coordinating with the approved remodeling and beautification by the chief minister.

A special inclusion will be a stop inside Gaddafi Stadium, and the tram service will not only serve sporting enthusiasts but also people attending any other events at this stadium.

The ticket prices for the tramway would be announced after the launch and, as such, would be very cheap to be afforded by every commuter.

The tramway project is one of the mega steps part of the course of urban development of Lahore, aimed at changing public transport across the city and improvising connectivity for its residents.
