In a significant development, the Railway Department has announced plans to expand its fleet of freight and passenger trains. The department aims to construct approximately 800 new wagons dedicated to freight services, alongside 230 new passenger coaches.
The expansion includes the purchase of high-capacity bogies, with a total of 1,050 new units expected to be added over the next year. The project, valued at PKR 6.15 billion, will be financed by the government, with an additional investment of PKR 11.15 billion for wagon purchases from China. The project is anticipated to take two years for completion.
Production of these high-capacity wagons has already begun in Pakistan as part of the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), with funding secured and ongoing collaborations with China.
