Jamaat-e-Islami’s former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested during a Gaza solidarity march outside the Islamabad Press Club. The protest, which aimed to proceed towards D-Chowk, faced resistance as Section 144 had been imposed in the area, prohibiting gatherings and demonstrations.
The Press Club area falls within the capital’s Red Zone, where all forms of protests and rallies are banned. Despite the restrictions, Senator Mushtaq, accompanied by his wife, women, and children, attempted to lead the march. Police were prepared, having blocked all roads leading to D-Chowk with barriers.
Around 25 people, including women and a child, were detained alongside the senator. The detainees were taken to an undisclosed location, and further updates on their status are awaited.
The police crackdown has sparked concern among supporters of the march, who claim their right to peaceful protest was violated. Further developments are expected as the situation unfolds.
