Dhaka – A large group of students stormed the office of Dr. Abdul Bashir, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Dhaka University, in protest against his controversial decision to ban the public recitation of the Quran on campus during Ramadan.
The protestors gathered outside the dean’s office, reciting verses from the Quran, praying for his guidance, and demanding his resignation, which he eventually submitted.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly as students pointed out that while Hindu festivals and colorful gatherings were permitted at the university, only Islamic gatherings faced restrictions.
Last Ramadan, Dr. Bashir had issued a show-cause notice to students organizing a Quran recitation event, which led to significant backlash on social media.
This protest marks a significant moment of tension at Dhaka University, reflecting broader concerns about religious freedoms and rights on campus.
